100 Best Horror Novels

Stephen Jones’ & Kim Newman’s 100 Best Horror Novels

“Picking the 100 best horror novels is, in fact, a bit harder that the 100 best science fiction books (there’s pretty good consensus on this list) or the 100 best fantasy books (there’s a lot of leeway for choice here). Horror spans more categories of fiction, involving all the major genres, as well as being a subset of “real” literature. Jones and Newman (a major horror writer in his own right) do a pretty good job, quibbleable as is to be expected, but offering a good basic list of horror novels, with the added bonus of brief commentaries on the works by important writers. So here we go.”–strangewords.com

Interesting List…. Was a little surprised that not a single Anne Rice book made it to the top one hundred. Surely would have considered Interview with te Vamppire right up there. Also “Carrie” didnt make it nor did “It.”

Well certainly a fascinating lsit, have never reead several of those books, certainly will make this list my must read list for the foreseeable future.

    Thanks for your comment!

I posted this list because I liked another list strangewords.com has on the 100 best sci-fi books. I’ve read a bunch of them, especially some of the titles I knew nothing about (like Earth Abides by George R. Stewart) and have been pleasantly surprised at the quality of the stuff.

Very different…. I have my own ideas, guess that what makes us all unique. This list has some books I will surely try and locate.

Many of these entries aren’t scary at all. I suppose the compilers wanted to give the list some depth by adding a little Shakespeare to the mix.
