365 Classic TV Intros

My cut-off point is 1989. I’m not including any shows that premiered in 1990 or after. I’m going for the nostalgia factor here, and shows that premiered after 1989 seem too recent to qualify.

Suggestions for additions are welcome. A big thanks to Jared and BrianNYC for supplying me with many links!

This post has been getting a lot of traffic since Bill Simmons “The Sport’s Guy” linked to it this past week. These are the shows that have received consistently high visitor clicks (in no particular order): Cheers, Charles in Charge, The Jeffersons, The Greatest American Hero, A-Team, Hill Street Blues, Doogie Howser, Airwolf, and Alf.

  1. Paul Smith on December 27, 2007

What about three of my favorites. Simon and Simon, The A-Team and MacGyver. I don’t know your methodology, but to me Simon and Simon’s intro was an instrumental masterpiece.

  2. Marc on December 27, 2007

Allow me to be the first to say : AWESOME

  3. barney miller on December 28, 2007

I cant believe you left me off this list!

  4. murdoc on December 28, 2007

I concur…macgyver was the first one i looked for, you must have inadvertently omitted it!

  5. clopper on December 28, 2007

Paul Smith: I just added those three to the post. I agree about A-Team and Simon and Simon. Those are great intros!

    Marc: Thanks!

Barney Miller: You’ve just been added!

Murdoc: Just added MacGyver, although I think that intro is a wee bit overrated.

  6. Mark on December 28, 2007

This is what makes YouTube so incredible. Being able to find all these great intros. Completely relived my childhood. But here’s one you missed - S.W.A.T. Probably my favorite theme as a kid. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Iwp1d7eKbA

  7. TV Fan on December 28, 2007

    Thanks for posting these!!!
Quincy with Jack Klugman was pretty good!!! And, Ellery Queen with the late great Jim Hutton. Two great openings that set the theme for the show.

  8. clopper on December 28, 2007

Hey Mark! I just added S.W.A.T.

  9. Jimmy on December 28, 2007

I see Tales from the Darkside up there, but what about Tales from the Crypt?

  10. clopper on December 28, 2007

Hey TV Fan! I just added those.

  11. crummyjoel on December 28, 2007

You should replace the “Batman” link with one to “Batman The Animated Series”. One of the best series, and intros, around:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lEx9r5enZsk

  12. clopper on December 28, 2007

Hey Jimmy and crummyjoel! Just added your great suggestions.

  13. jah on December 28, 2007

Land of the Lost….The Best intro EVER!

  14. kiran on December 28, 2007

here’s another one… Sanford and Son. Couldn’t find it on US Youtube:

    http://hk.youtube.com/watch?v=hsyT3FuKMpk

  15. clopper on December 28, 2007

Hey Jah, great suggestion–that was one of my favorite shows when I was a kid.

Thanks for the link kiran! I just added it.

  16. Big Bri on December 28, 2007

    WRKP in Cincinnati….another glaring omission

“As god is my witness, I thought Turkeys could fly”

  17. Jared on December 28, 2007

    Airwolf
    NYPD Blue
    Punky Brewster
    Streets of San Francisco
Tour of Duty with “Paint it Black” from the Rolling Stones is a good opening.

For some more obscure short lived 80’s series, but favorites of mine:
    Streethawk
    Automan
    Stingray

Maybe you can start a “TV Openings Nobody Saw” post.

  18. Jared on December 28, 2007

    Wait!!! No “Three’s Company”????

  19. Jared on December 28, 2007

OK, last one. This is a great list BTW.

Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew Mysteries
    http://youtube.com/watch?v=llLZXuUehvY

  20. matt on December 28, 2007

Gotta include Wonder Years on there. Also, I don’t think this qualifies as a classic for most, but the intro for The Adventures of Pete and Pete is one of my all time favorites.

  21. Jared on December 28, 2007

    So? I lied.

    St. Elsewhere
The Bob Newhart Show (can’t find it)
    Newhart (ditto)
    Family Matters
    Fresh Prince of Bel-Air
    Scarecrow and Mrs. King (http://youtube.com/watch?v=TEJHrVey3yo)
Kate & Allie (can’t find it)

Maybe I should get back to work. Thanks for the memories!

  22. nice on December 28, 2007

head of the class, highly underrated

  23. nice on December 28, 2007

    perfect strangers even more underrated.

  24. kroz on December 28, 2007

Awesome!! Just wasted three hours at work! How about “Fantasy Island”?

  25. BAWSMan on December 28, 2007

What, no Simpsons or 3-2-1 Contact?? Very disappointing . . .

  26. Leo on December 28, 2007

Maybe I’m just an old fogey, but I always loved “Mannix” and “Get Smart”.

  27. clopper on December 28, 2007

Big Bri: I agree. WKRP is one of the best. If you can find a link to it I’ll post it. I can’t find anything on YouTube.

Jared: Thanks for all your suggestions. I was able to add all of them except NYPD Blue (which is post-80’s–my cutoff point for classic tv intros), Nancy Drew (which I couldn’t find–I don’t like that edited version), Bob Newhart, Newhart, and Kate and Allie (I love these last three but wasn’t able to find them).

    Thanks again!

  28. clopper on December 28, 2007

Matt: Just added Wonder Years, since the show debuted in the 80’s.

  29. clopper on December 28, 2007

Kroz: Great suggestion! One of my all time favorites. I just added it.

  30. clopper on December 28, 2007

BAWSman: Never heard of 3-2-1 Contact, but I just added it. Couldn’t find an intro for the Simpsons.

Leo: Great suggestions! I added them.

  31. Ken on December 28, 2007

Excellent list! (I just found it courtesy of the Sports Guy.) Kudos for adding lesser-known shows like “Ellery Queen” that still had terrific themes.

How about “Peter Gunn”? That was the epitome of ’60s cool.

  32. clopper on December 28, 2007

Ken: Thanks for the suggestion, only I can’t find a video of that intro anywhere.

  33. John on December 28, 2007

There is no way this list can be complete without ‘Beverly Hills 90210′ or ‘NYPD Blue’.

    Just a couple suggestions.

  34. clopper on December 28, 2007

NYPD Blue debuted in 1993, and Beverly Hills 90210 debuted in 1990. My cutoff point is 1989. Shows that debuted in 1990 or later are too recent to be called classic just yet.

  35. Tim on December 28, 2007

Call me crazy, but the theme song for Golden Girls will stay in my head for the rest of my life.

  36. Brian_NYC on December 28, 2007

Here’s quite a few that shouldn’t be overlooked:

    Day By Day
    Dear John
    The Equalizer
Emergency Room/ER (sitcom w/ Elliot Gould)
    Growing Pains
    Highway to Heaven
    Jake and the Fatman
    Kate and Allie
    Mr. Belvedere
    Out of This World
    Wings

  37. clopper on December 28, 2007

    Tim: Tx, just added it.

Brian_NYC: Tx, added most of them, other I couldn’t find.

  38. nuke on December 28, 2007

No Simpsons or King of the Hill, but you have The Jetsons? That’s just not right.

  39. Neal on December 28, 2007

Dude, where’s Chico & The Man? Classic riff.

  40. clopper on December 28, 2007

    Neal: Just added it. Tx!

  41. calvinballer on December 28, 2007

Very cool list. I got one for you to add as well. Fat ALbert cartoon intro. Gotta have that for Cosby’s “Hey, Hey, Hey” near the end.

  42. Sean on December 29, 2007

Cosby Show, ALF, Family Ties, Full House, Smurfs, He Man, Who’s the Boss, Mr. Belvedere, Kate & Ally, 21 Jump St., Quantum Leap, Empty Nest, SOAP, WKRP in Cincinnati, Crazy Like a Fox, Matlock, Square Pegs, and Police Squad

    GOOD WORK!

  43. clopper on December 29, 2007

calvinballer: Good choice, I added it.

sean: lots of good choices, some i couldn’t find.

  44. Jeff F. on December 29, 2007

Very cool site. I added to my favorites as 140 Classic TV Intros, emailed the link out, and came back. Now it is 160. Keep up the work. Its a great trip to see these again. Streethawk, man I loved that show as a kid.

Might also mention that I found this via the Sports Guy as well.

  45. clopper on December 29, 2007

Thanks Jeff F! Simmons’ blurb about this post has sent me a lot of traffic. He must have a very large readership. I’ll keep adding shows as I think up new ones or new ones are suggested.

  46. Jared on December 29, 2007

How did we all forget Hunter?!?
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gzESuy4XR98

  47. Jared on December 29, 2007
  48. david on December 29, 2007

I think you need “Saved By the Bell” on there. It’s an absolute must-have.

  49. david on December 29, 2007

Oh man… and “Full House.” Need to update immediately.

  50. clopper on December 29, 2007

Jared: Thanks! I added all your suggestions, and thanks for the links.
    David: I added both. Tx!

Saved By The Bell and COPS debuted in 1989, so I included them.

  51. Frank Cannon on December 29, 2007

More Quinn Martin!!!! Cannon, Barnaby Jones, etc.

  52. clopper on December 29, 2007

Frank Cannon: You, and many of your friends, have been added.

  53. KJ on December 29, 2007

I’d like to put in a plug for the White Shadow.

  54. clopper on December 29, 2007

KJ: Sorry, couldn’t find White Shadow.

  55. Brendan on December 29, 2007

I’m almost positive that the “Batman the animated series” intro is post 1990.

  56. clopper on December 29, 2007

Brendan: You’re right! I just checked. It premiered in 1992, so I deleted it.

  57. KJ on December 29, 2007

Thanks for checking…great job on the list!

  58. clopper on December 29, 2007

    Tx!

  59. john on December 29, 2007

    retrojunk.com is pretty comprehensive

  60. clopper on December 29, 2007

John: You’re right. I’m going to go through that site and find some more links.

  61. luvrhino on December 29, 2007

A quick search didn’t yield a non-goofy video version of the intro, but “It’s Garry Shandling’s Show” has my favorite theme song:

    http://www.televisiontunes.com/Garry_Shandling_Show_1.html

  62. Jess on December 29, 2007

    Where’s F Troop??
    Where’s G.I. Joe??

  63. Dan on December 30, 2007

Fantastic list but you gotta put Hard Castle & McCormick in there…that was early 80’s cheese to a T.

hey i followed the link from sportsguy’s page. very nice list of links. i only see 1 omission. can you find the closing theme for WKRP? it was the cool rockin’ one.

  69. clopper on December 30, 2007

luvrhino: Thanks for suggestion, but I couldn’t find an intro.
Jess: Tx! Added both F. Troop and G.I. Joe (theanimated series–is that what you were referring to?)
Dan: You took the words right out of my mouth. Hardcastle was one of my favorites growing up. Added it.
Jared: 11 links! Thanks! Maybe I should pay you a commission.:) Added all of them.
Slugo: This list is just for opening themes. I added the intro for WKRP.

  70. sg fan on December 30, 2007

Good call sending this to the sports guy’s attention. That is how I found it and I have to say “great work”. One suggestion though: if you’re gonna have G.I. Joe on here (which is great) you gotta have the Transformers.

  71. clopper on December 30, 2007

    Tx, I posted it.

I thought there’d be a pretty good chance Bill Simmons would link to this post because he loves this kind of pop culture/nostalgic stuff.

  73. clopper on December 31, 2007

Jared: Tx again! I added all of them, including Beverly Hillbillies, which I found the classic theme for on RetroJunk. Can’t find Andy Griffith.

  74. Ella on December 31, 2007

What about Webster and Night Court? They would be ones to add for sure!

    Thanks for the memories!

  75. Ella on December 31, 2007

Remington Steele, Life Goes On, Thirtysomething,
Columbo, Degrassi, Family Affair, In the Heat of The Night, Marcus Welby, M.D., The Powers of Matthew Star, Vegas, Wiseguy, V…

    tx!

  79. Andy on December 31, 2007

What about the classic Baywatch theme song (”I’ll be there..”)? The one posted is an ancient one from Season 1 or the pilot only.

  80. clopper on December 31, 2007

Andy: I posted an early 1989 version of the intro because I’m going for a nostalgiac feel, and the more recent intros don’t have that.

I see you have The Hogan Family, but CBS had a total of 3 versions of the Valerie show. Here are the other openings…

Two programs I used to watch on Friday nights were “Love American Style” and “Rowan and Martins Laugh In”. LAS had a decent theme tune…?

  83. Jeff MacDonald on December 31, 2007

By the way, I enjoyed hearing these tunes again- really brings back good feelings from the past.

  84. clopper on December 31, 2007

Brian NYC: Happy New Years to you too! Tx for the links! I added all of them except for “Flash” (sorry). That’s so freaky about all those Hogan Family name changes. I added those links parenthetically beside the Hogan Family.
Jeff MacDonald: I’m glad you like the links, and that they bring back good memories. I was able to find Love American Style, but wasn’t so lucky with Laugh In. There are a lot of clips of Laugh In skits circulating on YouTube, but no intro.

    New Years Eve post!

I wanted to find American Bandstand intros in honor of Dick Clark’s Rockin’ Eve, but no luck. Some other late night / music shows…

Jared: Tx! USA Up All Night and those old HBO intros bring back memories. I added all of your links.
Brian_NYC: Tx! I already had Powers of Matthew Star. I added the rest. Mr. Wizard’s World! I remember having a crush on that girl who played his sidekick.

  89. Eric on January 2, 2008

Not sure if the link will work, but I didn’t see Mystery Science Theatre 3000 on the list. Hope you add it.

  90. Oppy on January 2, 2008

Just (1/2/2008) saw your list via “The Sports Guy” and wanted to suggest “The Wild Wild West”

This site is worth a million bucks if it would add the theme for the Million Dollar Movie, Peter Gunn and I-Spy. I love it!

  92. clopper on January 2, 2008

Eric: Great suggestion! I just added it. tx!
Oppy: Tx, cool intro! Just added it.
Michael Axelrod: Tx! I was able to find I-Spy, but had no such luck with Peter Gunn. And I checked YouTube and there are many “Million Dollar Movie” intros for particular cities. Was there a nationally broadcast version of the Million Dollar Movie?

  93. johnnyd on January 2, 2008

AWESOME. But we need “Bring ‘Em Back Alive” and “Scarecrow and Mrs. King”. And no, I’m not Bruce Boxleitner.

Also, the 1980s Mission Impossible had a great intro…

  94. johnnyd on January 2, 2008

    Whoops. “Scarecrow”’s there. Sorry. :-)

johnnyd: Tx for the suggestions! I added them.

  97. Frank Lakat on January 2, 2008

Awesome, you rock!! How about Have Gun Will Travel? Lots of laughs & memories on the board!!
    Patty Duke ( Identical Cousins?)

  98. clopper on January 2, 2008

Frank Lakat: You rock too, dude! Have Gun-Will Travel? Got it! Patty Duke Show? Got it!

Patty Duke Show, I forgot all about this one. I must have seen every episode of this series twice when I was a wee lad.
