My cut-off point is 1989. I’m not including any shows that premiered in 1990 or after. I’m going for the nostalgia factor here, and shows that premiered after 1989 seem too recent to qualify.
Suggestions for additions are welcome. A big thanks to Jared and BrianNYC for supplying me with many links!

What about three of my favorites. Simon and Simon, The A-Team and MacGyver. I don’t know your methodology, but to me Simon and Simon’s intro was an instrumental masterpiece.
Allow me to be the first to say : AWESOME
I cant believe you left me off this list!
I concur…macgyver was the first one i looked for, you must have inadvertently omitted it!
Paul Smith: I just added those three to the post. I agree about A-Team and Simon and Simon. Those are great intros!
Marc: Thanks!
Barney Miller: You’ve just been added!
Murdoc: Just added MacGyver, although I think that intro is a wee bit overrated.
This is what makes YouTube so incredible. Being able to find all these great intros. Completely relived my childhood. But here’s one you missed - S.W.A.T. Probably my favorite theme as a kid. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Iwp1d7eKbA
Thanks for posting these!!!
Quincy with Jack Klugman was pretty good!!! And, Ellery Queen with the late great Jim Hutton. Two great openings that set the theme for the show.
Hey Mark! I just added S.W.A.T.
I see Tales from the Darkside up there, but what about Tales from the Crypt?
Hey TV Fan! I just added those.
You should replace the “Batman” link with one to “Batman The Animated Series”. One of the best series, and intros, around:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lEx9r5enZsk
Hey Jimmy and crummyjoel! Just added your great suggestions.
Land of the Lost….The Best intro EVER!
here’s another one… Sanford and Son. Couldn’t find it on US Youtube:
http://hk.youtube.com/watch?v=hsyT3FuKMpk
Hey Jah, great suggestion–that was one of my favorite shows when I was a kid.
Thanks for the link kiran! I just added it.
WRKP in Cincinnati….another glaring omission
“As god is my witness, I thought Turkeys could fly”
Airwolf
NYPD Blue
Punky Brewster
Streets of San Francisco
Tour of Duty with “Paint it Black” from the Rolling Stones is a good opening.
For some more obscure short lived 80’s series, but favorites of mine:
Streethawk
Automan
Stingray
Maybe you can start a “TV Openings Nobody Saw” post.
Wait!!! No “Three’s Company”????
OK, last one. This is a great list BTW.
Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew Mysteries
http://youtube.com/watch?v=llLZXuUehvY
Gotta include Wonder Years on there. Also, I don’t think this qualifies as a classic for most, but the intro for The Adventures of Pete and Pete is one of my all time favorites.
So? I lied.
St. Elsewhere
The Bob Newhart Show (can’t find it)
Newhart (ditto)
Family Matters
Fresh Prince of Bel-Air
Scarecrow and Mrs. King (http://youtube.com/watch?v=TEJHrVey3yo)
Kate & Allie (can’t find it)
Maybe I should get back to work. Thanks for the memories!
head of the class, highly underrated
perfect strangers even more underrated.
Awesome!! Just wasted three hours at work! How about “Fantasy Island”?
What, no Simpsons or 3-2-1 Contact?? Very disappointing . . .
Maybe I’m just an old fogey, but I always loved “Mannix” and “Get Smart”.
Big Bri: I agree. WKRP is one of the best. If you can find a link to it I’ll post it. I can’t find anything on YouTube.
Jared: Thanks for all your suggestions. I was able to add all of them except NYPD Blue (which is post-80’s–my cutoff point for classic tv intros), Nancy Drew (which I couldn’t find–I don’t like that edited version), Bob Newhart, Newhart, and Kate and Allie (I love these last three but wasn’t able to find them).
Thanks again!
Matt: Just added Wonder Years, since the show debuted in the 80’s.
Kroz: Great suggestion! One of my all time favorites. I just added it.
BAWSman: Never heard of 3-2-1 Contact, but I just added it. Couldn’t find an intro for the Simpsons.
Leo: Great suggestions! I added them.
Excellent list! (I just found it courtesy of the Sports Guy.) Kudos for adding lesser-known shows like “Ellery Queen” that still had terrific themes.
How about “Peter Gunn”? That was the epitome of ’60s cool.
Ken: Thanks for the suggestion, only I can’t find a video of that intro anywhere.
There is no way this list can be complete without ‘Beverly Hills 90210′ or ‘NYPD Blue’.
Just a couple suggestions.
NYPD Blue debuted in 1993, and Beverly Hills 90210 debuted in 1990. My cutoff point is 1989. Shows that debuted in 1990 or later are too recent to be called classic just yet.
Call me crazy, but the theme song for Golden Girls will stay in my head for the rest of my life.
Here’s quite a few that shouldn’t be overlooked:
Day By Day
Dear John
The Equalizer
Emergency Room/ER (sitcom w/ Elliot Gould)
Growing Pains
Highway to Heaven
Jake and the Fatman
Kate and Allie
Mr. Belvedere
Out of This World
Wings
Tim: Tx, just added it.
Brian_NYC: Tx, added most of them, other I couldn’t find.
No Simpsons or King of the Hill, but you have The Jetsons? That’s just not right.
Dude, where’s Chico & The Man? Classic riff.
Neal: Just added it. Tx!
Very cool list. I got one for you to add as well. Fat ALbert cartoon intro. Gotta have that for Cosby’s “Hey, Hey, Hey” near the end.
Cosby Show, ALF, Family Ties, Full House, Smurfs, He Man, Who’s the Boss, Mr. Belvedere, Kate & Ally, 21 Jump St., Quantum Leap, Empty Nest, SOAP, WKRP in Cincinnati, Crazy Like a Fox, Matlock, Square Pegs, and Police Squad
GOOD WORK!
calvinballer: Good choice, I added it.
sean: lots of good choices, some i couldn’t find.
Very cool site. I added to my favorites as 140 Classic TV Intros, emailed the link out, and came back. Now it is 160. Keep up the work. Its a great trip to see these again. Streethawk, man I loved that show as a kid.
Might also mention that I found this via the Sports Guy as well.
Thanks Jeff F! Simmons’ blurb about this post has sent me a lot of traffic. He must have a very large readership. I’ll keep adding shows as I think up new ones or new ones are suggested.

I think you need “Saved By the Bell” on there. It’s an absolute must-have.
Oh man… and “Full House.” Need to update immediately.
Jared: Thanks! I added all your suggestions, and thanks for the links.
David: I added both. Tx!
Saved By The Bell and COPS debuted in 1989, so I included them.
More Quinn Martin!!!! Cannon, Barnaby Jones, etc.
Frank Cannon: You, and many of your friends, have been added.
I’d like to put in a plug for the White Shadow.
KJ: Sorry, couldn’t find White Shadow.
I’m almost positive that the “Batman the animated series” intro is post 1990.
Brendan: You’re right! I just checked. It premiered in 1992, so I deleted it.
Thanks for checking…great job on the list!
Tx!
retrojunk.com is pretty comprehensive
John: You’re right. I’m going to go through that site and find some more links.
A quick search didn’t yield a non-goofy video version of the intro, but “It’s Garry Shandling’s Show” has my favorite theme song:
http://www.televisiontunes.com/Garry_Shandling_Show_1.html
Where’s F Troop??
Where’s G.I. Joe??
Fantastic list but you gotta put Hard Castle & McCormick in there…that was early 80’s cheese to a T.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JnNMiEkYJjQ
hey i followed the link from sportsguy’s page. very nice list of links. i only see 1 omission. can you find the closing theme for WKRP? it was the cool rockin’ one.
luvrhino: Thanks for suggestion, but I couldn’t find an intro.
Added all of them.
Jess: Tx! Added both F. Troop and G.I. Joe (theanimated series–is that what you were referring to?)
Dan: You took the words right out of my mouth. Hardcastle was one of my favorites growing up. Added it.
Jared: 11 links! Thanks! Maybe I should pay you a commission.
Slugo: This list is just for opening themes. I added the intro for WKRP.
Good call sending this to the sports guy’s attention. That is how I found it and I have to say “great work”. One suggestion though: if you’re gonna have G.I. Joe on here (which is great) you gotta have the Transformers.
Tx, I posted it.
I thought there’d be a pretty good chance Bill Simmons would link to this post because he loves this kind of pop culture/nostalgic stuff.

Jared: Tx again! I added all of them, including Beverly Hillbillies, which I found the classic theme for on RetroJunk. Can’t find Andy Griffith.
What about Webster and Night Court? They would be ones to add for sure!
Thanks for the memories!
Remington Steele, Life Goes On, Thirtysomething,
Columbo, Degrassi, Family Affair, In the Heat of The Night, Marcus Welby, M.D., The Powers of Matthew Star, Vegas, Wiseguy, V…
These are some other show missing from that era.
A Different World
China Beach, Father Dowling Mysteries.
Ella: I already had Webster, A Different World, and Night Court. I added the rest of your suggestions except Degrassi (which I couldn’t find an early intro for), Marcus Welby, Thirtysomething, Columbo, and Family Affair (none of which I could find).
tx!
What about the classic Baywatch theme song (”I’ll be there..”)? The one posted is an ancient one from Season 1 or the pilot only.
Andy: I posted an early 1989 version of the intro because I’m going for a nostalgiac feel, and the more recent intros don’t have that.
Here’s plenty more. Happy 2008!

Two programs I used to watch on Friday nights were “Love American Style” and “Rowan and Martins Laugh In”. LAS had a decent theme tune…?
By the way, I enjoyed hearing these tunes again- really brings back good feelings from the past.
Brian NYC: Happy New Years to you too! Tx for the links! I added all of them except for “Flash” (sorry). That’s so freaky about all those Hogan Family name changes. I added those links parenthetically beside the Hogan Family.
Jeff MacDonald: I’m glad you like the links, and that they bring back good memories. I was able to find Love American Style, but wasn’t so lucky with Laugh In. There are a lot of clips of Laugh In skits circulating on YouTube, but no intro.

This site is worth a million bucks if it would add the theme for the Million Dollar Movie, Peter Gunn and I-Spy. I love it!
Eric: Great suggestion! I just added it. tx!
Oppy: Tx, cool intro! Just added it.
Michael Axelrod: Tx! I was able to find I-Spy, but had no such luck with Peter Gunn. And I checked YouTube and there are many “Million Dollar Movie” intros for particular cities. Was there a nationally broadcast version of the Million Dollar Movie?
AWESOME. But we need “Bring ‘Em Back Alive” and “Scarecrow and Mrs. King”. And no, I’m not Bruce Boxleitner.
Also, the 1980s Mission Impossible had a great intro…
Whoops. “Scarecrow”’s there. Sorry.

James: I added The Friendly Giant, but couldn’t find Bozo the Clown, although Letterman did a pretty fuuny skit with him here: http://youtube.com/watch?v=Gv4bHPIRbak
GREAT idea.

allanadale: I’ve been looking for the intro to Benson for ages but haven’t been able to find it.
neil: Added both. tx!
D: Added Tranzor Z and Gobots, and I like the original version of Misfits of Science so I changed the link. tx!
Hipster: Yeah, this is a great intro. I remember it, but the video isn’t working.
todd: Added it. tx!
I am sure you have this one, but I can’t think of the name of the show.
The song is “Hero”, or “I Need a Hero”.
It’s the show where that character shot himself in the head with a gun loaded with blanks and died on the set.
DDI: That’s Cover Up, which I have above, and the actor who shot himself is Jon Erik Hexum, who also starred in Voyagers, which I also have above.
A suggestion from a former 12 year old who loved this show:
Here Come the Brides
uh…where’s The Snorks?
mechugena: Added it.
rainbow: Found it, but somebody recorded it off their TV. Still, the quality isn’t that bad.
GREAT LIST. heres a couple more i remember as a kid:
here come the brides
Topcat
can’t remember the name of the show, but it was astronauts in caveman times and started with “its about time, its about space, about two men in the strangest place..”
milton the monster
the archies
jackie gleason show
mr. magoo (saturday nights)
wheres huddles ( a flintstone ripoff with football players that basically was the flintstones and the rubbles. the men were football players and the ladies cheerleaders)
linus the lionheared
tennesee tuxedo
astro boy
time tunnel
green hornet
im sure the list could go on and on…thanks for the memories!
How about “Moonlighting” and “Masterpiece Theater”?
Here is a good oldies song as the intro to the short-lived show “Crime Story” which came on after “Miami Vice” on Friday’s for a brief stint.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Is5ofSHZWTM
By the way, awesome job of compiling all of these songs in one place.
kevin: Tx for all the suggestions! I added most of them. I couldn’t find an appropriate Mr. Magoo intro, or for Jackie Gleason Show and Tennessee Tuxedo. The show you’re referring to about astronauts is “It’s About TIme” which was created by Sherwood Shwartz of Brady Bunch infamy. I couldn’t find an intro for it.
Meg: Tx! I already had Moonlighting, but I found an old intro of Masterpiece Theater.
Steve: Tx! I kept reminding myself to add that one and kept forgetting. Great intro!
Another:
Movin On:

May I suggest adding “The Persuaders”?
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=bgLEdvRKAYI
Jay: Tx! I added it. Great intro, by the way.
Marcell: Tx! I added it.
thanks!! as i was walking down the street, i thought of two other ones:
NANNY AND THE PROFESSOR (”phobe figalilly is a silly name”…)
and COURTSHIP OF EDDIES FATHER.
keep up the good work!
ps….did you realize that the LOVE AMERICAN STYLE intro you have is the pilot that introduced HAPPY DAYS????
i remember watching that exact show at my great grandparents house in the late sixties..
whoops, thought of another:
WAIT TILL YOUR FATHER GETS HOME.
you can tell i was into cartoons!
kevin: Tx for your suggestions and comments! Courtship is a terrific intro that I had never seen. I added all of them. Isn’t You Tube the best?
Very cool list. We are infatuated with TV show intros over here at Detour. We just did a guide to 1970s TV Detectives. Check it here: http://detour-mag.com/assets/2008/01/15/1970s-tv-detectives/
does anybody remember a tv show (didn’t last long) but the “hero” was a guy who was followed around by a cursor that would create a car or motorcycle - the vehicles would make 90 degree turns at high speed, like Tron (the video game)???
Can’t remember the name of that show for the life of me.
Schoolhouse Rock: I’m just a Bill
Schoolhouse Rock: Conjunction Function!
Schoolhouse Rock: The Preamble!!
I love this stuff. Kids today miss out on so much!!
Schoolhouse Rock: Elbow Room.
Schoolhouse Rock: Fireworks
Schoolhouse Rock: Interjections
Schoolhouse Rock: Adverbs
Schoolhouse Rock: Verbs
Schoolhouse Rock: The Shot Heard Round the World
Schoolhouse Rock: A noun is a person, place or thing
Great find on the White Shadow….thanks!
Thanks kj!
BK, if you haven’t found it yet, the show you’re thinking of is “Automan.”
Jared - thanks that’s the one.
Completely enjoying the ‘old school’ intro’s BUT theres one that is ‘MISSING and Nick Adams is rolling over yelling ‘THE REBLE”
This is still a wild ride down memory lane.
And would be more fun if Then Came Bronson was
along for the ride too.
I can’t believe nobody nominated “Mr. Bean” yet.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=cWZ-gDxkvRc
Sorry, I banked on one site that said “1989 - 2005″, but it seems like that means production years as the first episode indeed aired on 1/1/1990. So no Mr. Bean for this list
PLEASE DELETE ALL OF MY COMMENTS (including this one).
They would only confuse people, as there is another problem with the specified dates: 2005 was NOT a production year, instead an episode produced in 1995 aired for the first time then.
How about the title sequences for “Hazel?” There are about nine or ten of them, as they changed each season.
In fact, one title sequence was used for only one episode, varies slightly from the other one used that season in that “Harold” (called “Sport” by “Hazel”) runs off to the right off the patio, instead of skipping backwards when he smells the cookies “Hazel” has just baked & taken out of the oven.
I have all of the episodes from all five years of the show, so thus all the title sequences I could copy ten episodes to a disc, but I would have to include the complete episodes, as I don;t know how to edit for just the intro sequences. But if you know how to edit them before uploading, then let me know.
